Laser hair removal vs. waxing: which method is best for you?

You've probably asked yourself this question more than once: is it worth making the leap to laser, or is traditional waxing enough for me? There's no one-size-fits-all answer — and in this article we'll honestly explain the differences so you can make an informed decision.
At Emma Centre we offer both services, and every day we help our clients find the option that best suits their needs, their lifestyle and their budget.
First of all: how does each method work?
Diode laser hair removal uses a beam of light that penetrates the skin until it reaches the hair follicle. The heat progressively destroys the hair root, permanently reducing its growth over the course of the sessions. At our center we work with the Sapphire® diode laser system, which incorporates a cooling head to make the treatment much more comfortable.
Waxing works mechanically: the wax adheres to the hair and, when pulled out, pulls it out from the root. The result is immediate and the skin remains smooth for 3-5 weeks, until the hair grows back.
Direct comparison: laser hair removal vs. waxing
Laser hair removal | Waxing | |
Duration of the result | Permanent (80-95% reduction) | 3-5 weeks |
Required sessions | 6-10 initial sessions | Every 3-5 weeks, indefinitely |
Pain | Low (Sapphire® cooling head) | Moderate (depends on the area) |
Long-term cost | One-time investment, long-term savings | Permanent recurring cost |
Hair between sessions | You need to shave (not wax) | No need to do anything between waxing sessions |
Immediate results | No (requires sessions) | Yes, same day result |
For sensitive skin | Very suitable | Can irritate |
Areas of the body | All (face, body, intimate area) | All |
When is the diode laser better?
Laser is the ideal option if you meet one or more of these conditions:
You're tired of the hair removal routine and want a definitive solution without having to think about it every few weeks.
You have sensitive skin that gets irritated, reddens or suffers from ingrown hairs with wax or shaving.
You have dark, thick hair , which responds best to the diode laser.
You want to save in the long term : although the initial investment is higher, in 1-2 years you amortize the cost compared to a lifetime of wax sessions.
You practice sports or travel often and don't want to depend on appointments every month.
When is waxing best?
Wax remains an excellent option in many cases:
You are in a hurry for a specific event and need immediate results today.
Your hair is very light, blonde or gray : the laser needs melanin in the hair to act, and for very light hair, wax remains the best alternative.
You want to prepare specific areas on a one-time basis without commitment to treatment.
You are pregnant : laser hair removal is not recommended during pregnancy, but waxing is (with the right products).
Your budget is limited in the short term and you prefer a small monthly expense rather than an initial investment.

Can the two methods be combined?
Yes, but with one important condition: while you are doing the cycle of laser sessions, you cannot wax or tweezers between sessions. You need the hair to have a connection to the bulb for the laser to work. You can shave, however.
A common combination is: performing laser treatment on the main areas (legs, armpits, bikini) and keeping the wax for areas where laser is not such a priority or for possible occasional check-ups once the treatment is finished.
How much does each option cost at Emma Centre?
Waxing: price per session, no obligation. You can come whenever you want or schedule an appointment periodically.
Sapphire® diode laser hair removal: rates per area and per session pack. Check our updated prices for 2026 or ask us for a personalized quote.
If you are considering starting laser, remember that we offer a free prior assessment where we explain the number of sessions estimated for your specific case and the approximate total cost.
Frequently asked questions
Can I wax while I'm having laser treatment? No. Between laser sessions you should shave the area, never wax, tweezers or thread. Waxing removes the hair root which the laser needs to work.
Is laser 100% permanent? The reduction is permanent in the vast majority of cases (80-95% of the hair). Some hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause, PCOS) can cause new hair to appear over the years, but a one-time maintenance session is enough.
Does waxing damage the skin in the long term? Waxing done correctly, with quality products and by a professional, does not damage the skin. However, it can irritate very sensitive skin or delicate areas if it is not done with the right technique.
Which method do you recommend at Emma Centre? It depends on each person. When we are thinking about laser hair removal vs. waxing, if you are looking for a permanent solution and you have dark hair, laser is the best investment. If you need immediate results or your hair is light, waxing is your option. And many clients combine the two services on different areas of the body — you don't have to choose just one.
