If you're thinking about saying goodbye to waxing, tweezing and shaving forever, you've probably heard of diode laser hair removal . But with so much information on the market, it's normal to have doubts: is it for me? How many sessions will I need? Will it give real results?

In this article we explain everything you need to know from our aesthetics center in Móra la Nova, where we work with Sapphire® diode laser technology, one of the most advanced available today.

What is a diode laser and how does it work?

The diode laser is a permanent hair removal system that works by destroying the hair follicle from its root. It does this thanks to a concentrated beam of light that penetrates the skin until it reaches the hair bulb, where the heat progressively renders it useless.

Unlike other systems such as intense pulsed light (IPL) or Alexandrite laser, the diode laser works with a wavelength of around 800 nm , which allows it to penetrate deeper into the skin. This has a very important advantage: it works especially well on dark skin or with thick, dark hair, which are usually more difficult to treat with other technologies.

The Sapphire® system that we use at Emma Centre also incorporates a sapphire head that cools the skin during the treatment, which minimizes discomfort and makes the session much more comfortable.

Who is diode laser hair removal ideal for?

Diode laser hair removal is an excellent option for most profiles, but there are some cases where it gives the best results:

  • Light skin with dark hair: the ideal combination for any hair removal laser.

  • Brown or slightly dark skin: thanks to the diode wavelength, it is safe for skin tones that could suffer irritation with other lasers.

  • Thick and deep hair: the most resistant roots respond very well to the penetration of the diode laser.

  • Large areas of the body: legs, back, chest, armpits or bikini line — the diode laser is efficient on large areas.

It should be noted that the laser does not act on white hair, very light blonde hair or fine velvety hair (fuzz), as it needs melanin in the hair to absorb the light.

How many diode laser sessions do you need?

This is the question everyone asks, and the honest answer is: it depends . But we can give you very clear guidance.

Hair grows in cycles. The laser is only effective during the anagen phase (active growth phase), which is when the hair has direct connection to the bulb. Since not all hairs are in the same phase at the same time, sessions must be repeated to progressively capture all the follicles.

In general, most people need between 6 and 10 sessions to achieve significant permanent hair reduction (80-95%). Factors that influence the number of sessions are:

Factor

Fewer sessions

More sessions

Hair color

Dark hair

Light or reddish hair

Hair thickness

Thick hair

Fine hair

Body area

Armpits, bikini

Legs, face

Hormonal changes

No alterations

Pregnancy, PCOS, menopause

Sessions are typically spaced every 4-8 weeks , depending on the area of the body and the speed of hair growth.

What is a laser session like at Emma Centre?

Our protocol at Emma Centre is as follows:

  1. Free prior consultation: we assess your skin and hair type, the areas to be treated and we explain the rates without obligation.

  2. Preparation of the area: the area must be shaved on the day of the session (not waxed or tweezed in the previous weeks).

  3. Laser application: The Sapphire® head cools the skin while the laser works. The sensation is like a gentle kiss of heat. Duration varies from 10 minutes (armpits) to 45-60 minutes (full legs).

  4. Post-treatment care: we apply a soothing cream and tell you how to care for the area in the following hours (avoid the sun, do not apply perfumes or irritating creams).

Diode laser vs. IPL: what's the difference?

Many people confuse the two systems. Here's a quick summary:

IPL (intense pulsed light) is a less specific, polychromatic technology that may be less effective on darker skin tones and usually requires more sessions. It is the technology used in many home devices.

Diode laser is a monochromatic beam of light, much more precise and powerful, that acts specifically on the hair follicle. It requires fewer sessions, is safe on more skin types and gives longer lasting results.

If you have tried IPL without the expected results, the diode laser may be the solution you need.

Essential care before and after each session

To ensure the best results and protect your skin:

Before the session:

  • Do not wax, tweezers or thread in the previous 4 weeks.

  • Shave the area the day of the session or the night before.

  • Do not sunbathe for the previous two weeks (or go to a tanning booth).

  • Inform if you are taking photosensitizing medication.

After the session:

  • Avoid direct sun for 48-72 hours and use high sun protection.

  • Do not use the sauna, swimming pool or high-intensity sports for 24 hours.

  • Do not apply deodorants with alcohol or perfumes in the first few hours (on the treated area).

  • Moisturizes the skin well.

How much does diode laser hair removal cost?

At Emma Centre we have rates adapted to each area and profile. You can check our updated prices for 2026 directly on the website or ask us for a personalized quote by WhatsApp without obligation.

Remember that the number of sessions varies per person, so we always recommend a free prior consultation where we evaluate your specific case and indicate the estimated number of sessions and the approximate total cost.

Frequently asked questions about laser hair removal

Can laser hair removal be done in the summer? Yes, but you must take extreme precautions with the sun. We recommend not treating highly exposed areas if you expect a lot of sun exposure. Winter is the ideal season to start treatment.

Does it hurt? With the Sapphire® system, treatment is much more comfortable than with conventional lasers. Most clients describe the sensation as a "gentle pinch" or local heat. Nothing that is not perfectly tolerable.

How long does the result last? Hair reduction is permanent in the vast majority of cases. Some very fine hairs or hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause) can cause new hairs to appear over the years, but one or two maintenance sessions are enough.

Can I have laser if I have dark skin? Yes. The Sapphire® diode laser is one of the safest for dark skin, thanks to its wavelength and cooling system. Consult us and we will assess your case.
